PGA Championship Sony Open 2010

Ryan Palmer Wins the Sony Open

Ryan Palmer and Robert Allenby were tied over the final three holes at Waialae, and when Steve Stricker failed to make birdie from a bunker on the par 5 18th a few groups ahead of them, the Sony Open came down to who could birdie the final hole. It was a hard charging chip shot by Palmer that hit the pin and backed up for a 4-inch tap in birdie to seal the win.

The runner-up finish for Allenby is the seventh of his career. The 4-time tour winner made his ninth start at the Sony Open this week, with top-10 finishes in 2003 (T4), 2007 (T8) and 2010 (2nd). Allenby failed to make his birdie putt from just inside 10 feet to tie Palmer on the 18th hole.

Allenby, who finished 14-under, played the first seven holes at Waialae this week 1-over-par. It was a different story on the final 11 holes, as he went 15-under and bogey-free. Palmer had a 1-shot victory and his immediate future took on a whole new meaning at the Waikiki shores all week.

Ryan Palmer, who finished at 15-under 265 and earned $990,000, remained dazed at what he had achieved in the hour after hoisting the trophy and having a lei draped around his neck. The victory for Palmer is worth 500 points and moves him into a tie with Geoff Ogilvy in the top spot in the FedExCup standings with 500 points.
